Spain has released its tourism data for September and the first nine months of 2024, showing record highs in both visitor numbers and tourism revenue.
100 billion euros tourism revenue in 9 months
In September, Spain's tourism revenue rose by 12.7 percent compared to the same month in 2023, reaching €12.615 billion. For the nine-month period from January to September, tourism income increased by 16.9 percent, totaling €99.086 billion.
The most profitable source markets
Of the total revenue generated in these nine months, 18.4 percent came from the United Kingdom, with Germany contributing 12.1 percent and France 9 percent In September alone, package tours accounted for €10.2 billion of Spain's tourism income, with the largest portions coming from entertainment (19.8 percent transportation (19.6 percent), and accommodation (17.1 percent).
Individual spending by tourists also saw an uptick. The average daily expenditure per tourist rose by 3.8 percent to €195, while the overall average spending per tourist increased by 3.3 percent to €1,315.
Tourist number breaks a new record
The number of visitors to Spain in September 2024 increased by 9.1 percent compared to the previous year, reaching 9.6 million. The United Kingdom topped the list of tourist source countries, sending 2.046 million visitors, followed by Germany with 1.309 million, France with 1.1 million, the United States with 558,000, Italy with 505,000, and the Netherlands with 496,000.
Nearly 74 million visitors in nine months
Between January and September, Spain welcomed approximately 73.9 million visitors, marking a 10.9 percent increase compared to the same period in the previous year. The UK remained Spain's largest source market with 14.708 million visitors, followed by France with 10.291 million, Germany with 9.354 million, Italy with 4.262 million, the Netherlands with 3.881 million, and the United States with 3.35 million.
Top six market bring over 45 million visitors
In the first nine months of the year, the top five source markets— the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands— accounted for 42.5 million of Spain's visitors.
