The Greek Islands, frequently in the news for their affordability compared to other destinations where tourists face exorbitant prices, are expected to see a record number of Turkish tourists this summer.

According to a report by Yorgo Kırbaki from Hürriyet, the number of Turkish tourists visiting Greece this year has exceeded 182,000. Greek tourism officials have expressed their satisfaction, stating, "Thanks to them, there are no lobsters left in Lesbos this year. Unlike Northern Europeans, Turkish tourists do not suffice with just a salad. This summer, Turkish tourists saved the island's economy. However, if we try to overcharge them, they won't return."

Statistics from the Greek Ministry of Public Order reveal that by the first week of July, over 182,000 Turkish tourists had entered the country. Of these, 35,000 entered through the “visa on arrival” scheme, implemented in ten islands since April 1. Speaking to Kathemerini, Greek tourism officials noted that Turkish tourists prefer the islands because they receive higher quality services at more affordable prices.

"No lobsters left in Lesbos"

Aris Lazaris, General Secretary of the Lesbos Tourism Agencies Association, stated, “75% of the tourists in Lesbos are Turkish. Their contribution to the island's economy is significant. Most Turkish tourists are affluent. Thanks to them, there are no lobsters left in Lesbos this year. Unlike Northern Europeans, Turkish tourists do not satisfy themselves with just a salad. It’s crucial that we treat them professionally. If we try to overcharge them, they won’t return. Local shopkeepers are well aware of this.”

Fotini Yerondi, a hotel owner on Samos Island, added, “This summer, Turkish tourists saved the island's economy. There is a 50% drop in tourists from the Netherlands and Scandinavian countries. Turkish tourists are not demanding. They don’t complain about everything.”

"Returning visitors"

Journalist Teodoros Piliotis highlighted that Turkish tourists spend money everywhere. “Turkish tourists are both calm and good customers. They spend money not only in hotels and restaurants but also in supermarkets and electronics stores. Those who visit once often return the next year. They have formed friendships with the island residents.”

"Losing our competitive edge"

Kıvanç Meriç, Chairman of the İzmir Regional Representation Committee of the Association of Turkish Travel Agencies (TÜRSAB), shared his thoughts with the Greek newspaper: “Your islands are beautiful, and the Greek people treat us warmly. In Turkey, high inflation has caused prices to soar. We used to be competitive in global tourism in terms of prices, but we’ve lost this edge for both Turkish and foreign tourists. Restaurant prices in regions like Bodrum are very high.”
