According to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), tourism revenue in the third quarter of 2024—covering July, August, and September—rose by 3.9 percent compared to the same period last year, reaching $23.219 billion. Of this revenue, 14.7 percent was generated by citizens residing abroad who visited Türkiye.
Visitors organized their trips either independently or through package tours. This quarter, individual expenditures accounted for $15.078 billion, while package tour expenses totaled $8.142 billion.
Visitor numbers increase by 3.5% compared to last year
In Q3 2024, the number of visitors coming to Türkiye rose by 3.5 percent compared to the same quarter last year, reaching 23,2 million. Among these, Turkish citizens residing abroad made up 12.2 percent (2,8 million).
Average per-night expenditure for visitors was $95, while citizens residing abroad spent an average of $62 per night. In this quarter, package tour expenses made up 35.1 percent of tourism revenue, food and beverage expenses accounted for 17.9 percent, and international transportation expenses contributed 10.9 percent. Compared to the same period last year, package tour expenses increased by 18 percent, while food and beverage expenses and international transportation expenses decreased by 2.2 percent and 7.6 percent, respectively.
Visitors primarily arrived for "sightseeing, entertainment, sports, and cultural activities" (71.6 percent)
Following this category, "visiting relatives and friends" accounted for 19.4 percent of visits, and "shopping" ranked third at 4 percent. For citizens residing abroad, "visiting relatives and friends" remained the primary reason for travel, making up 69.6 percent of visits.
Tourism expenditure drops by 22.5 percent compared to last year
Tourism expenditure by Turkish citizens traveling abroad fell by 22.5 percent compared to the same quarter last year, totaling $1.874 billion. Personal expenses accounted for $1.518 billion of this, while package tour expenses were $356.4 million.
Outbound travel by citizens also increases
The number of Turkish citizens traveling abroad in Q3 increased by 10.3 percent compared to the same quarter last year, reaching 3 million 286 thousand average expenditure per person was recorded at $570.
